Donating at funerals

Funeral donations

Many families choose to request donations in lieu of flowers at a funeral or memorial service. This meaningful gesture is a wonderful way for family and friends to celebrate the life of a loved one while supporting the care provided by St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

Donations given in memory of a loved one help us continue to provide specialist care and support for local patients and their families when it is needed most.

There are two ways to collect funeral donations:

  • Using a personalised donation box at the funeral or memorial service
  • Creating a Funeral Tribute Fund, where donations can be made online

Personalised donation boxes

If you would like to collect donations at a funeral or memorial service, St Wilfrid’s Hospice can provide a personalised donation box, along with collection envelopes for guests.

The donation box can be customised with your loved one’s name, date of birth and date of death. You may also wish to include a photograph, creating a personal and meaningful tribute.

Collection envelopes can be placed on pews, seats or tables for those attending the service. They allow donors to make a gift by cash, cheque or bank card, and include the option to complete a Gift Aid declaration if eligible.

Guests may return their donation on the day or post it directly to the hospice at a later date using the address provided on the envelope. We simply ask that the name of the person being remembered is clearly included so that all gifts can be recorded in their memory.

Our thanks

We understand how important it is to recognise the generosity of family and friends who choose to support the hospice in this way.

We therefore write to the next of kin, or a nominated family member, to thank them for their support and to let them know the total amount donated in memory of their loved one.

Thank you for choosing to support St Wilfrid’s Hospice and helping us continue to make a difference for future patients and families.

Funeral donations and donations in memory

  • While Funeral Directors will usually provide the family with the names of donors and the value of donations collected at a funeral service, St Wilfrid's Hospice is unable to share the names of donors or donation amounts for gifts given in memory with the Next of Kin or family members of the deceased.
  • Donations will only be acknowledged to the Next of Kin or family member if the donor has provided written permission for us to do so.
  • A Memorial Fund is created internally for each person in whose memory donations are received. Any gifts received in their memory will be allocated to this fund, provided we have been notified of the individual's name.
  • The Next of Kin or family member may request the total amount received within the Memorial Fund. However, due to Data Protection legislation and GDPR, we are unable to provide a breakdown of individual donations or donor details.
Funeral tribute funds

An online tribute fund is a wonderful way to remember and celebrate someone special.

Creating a tribute fund in memory of a loved one provides a dedicated online space where family and friends can come together to honour their life, share memories, and celebrate the lasting impact they had on those around them.

Your tribute fund acts as a personal memorial page, allowing you to express and preserve precious memories through messages, photographs, music, and videos. It can also become a place where others can share their own stories, thoughts, and tributes, creating a lasting legacy for future generations.

Many families choose to use their tribute fund to support St Wilfrid’s Hospice, helping us continue to provide compassionate care and support to local patients and families.

Donating funeral flowers

If you would like to donate the flowers from your loved one’s funeral to St Wilfrid’s Hospice, we would be very grateful to receive them.

Your flowers will be thoughtfully displayed throughout the hospice, including in The Street Café, communal areas, and patient rooms, where they can bring comfort and brighten the day for patients, families, staff, and volunteers.

You can arrange for your Funeral Director to deliver the flowers to the hospice following the funeral service, or you are welcome to bring them in yourself.

The generous donation of funeral flowers is a meaningful way to remember a loved one while bringing enjoyment and comfort to others during a difficult time.

Thank you for your support. Your kindness is greatly appreciated.
