Rose walks on fire for Ray
Rose is currently at the top of the fundraising leaderboard for our Fire Walk challenge. She signed up as a way to say thank you for the on-going care we’re offering her husband, Ray. We asked her to tell us more about it.
“Music and dancing are Ray’s passion, and he had a wonderful life travelling the world as a dance host on cruise ships for 18 years. We met seven years ago at a Salsa class.
Ray was given his diagnosis of myeloid leukaemia and bowel cancer in December 2024 and deemed terminal. He also has low neutrophils, which means he has a weaker immune system and an increased risk of infection. He’s been through so much and fought so hard after being given around 12 weeks to live.
Ray spent just under a month on the hospice Inpatient Unit earlier this year and they provided wonderful care. We were dealt with in a completely caring and compassionate way. We had visited the hospice many times before Ray’s stay, but until you become involved, you’re not aware of just how caring all the staff are, and so many volunteers give up their time freely to do it for love.
The Fire Walk is so important to me to give back financially to help keep this wonderful place going. I am looking forward to the challenge of fire walking and the achievement at the end, knowing in some small way I have helped towards another person receiving the same wonderful treatment.”
