Hospice shop volunteer scoops award

A St Wilfrid’s Hospice shop volunteer who was crowned Young Volunteer of the Year at the Polegate Community Foundation Awards has spoken of his overwhelm at even being nominated.

Twenty-three-year-old Jack White was secretly put forward by his manager Roz Murray at our Polegate charity shop, where he covers five shifts a week. He only found out he was in the running for the award when he received a letter from the organisers.

“I felt honoured and overwhelmed to have even been nominated, so to actually win on the night is something I’m really proud of,” Jack said. “It’s been a privilege to be able to give back to my local community and meet so many amazing people along the way. This achievement means so much to me.”

Jack, who has been volunteering for St Wilfrid’s for two and a half years, said he enjoys volunteering at the shop. “It has got a real family vibe to it. We have a friendly, inclusive team and I’m always learning new skills. I enjoy chatting to the customers, helping them with their purchases and making sure they have a pleasant customer experience. I also enjoy the camaraderie and laughter we have within the team, and supporting the other volunteers.”

Roz is delighted her nomination was successful. “Jack’s kindness, loyalty, enthusiasm, and unwavering commitment to St Wilfrid’s shine through in everything he does, making such a difference for our charity. Congratulations, Jack. Keep being the wonderful person you are – you make us all proud!”
