Meet Kate

What’s your role?
I’m a Registered Nurse on the Inpatient Unit.

What inspired you to become a St Wilfrid’s Hospice nurse?
My lovely brother, Tony, was cared for by the hospice in 2018. He received the most amazing care at what was a very difficult time for us as a family, and from what I’d experienced, I was keen to work there.

Having worked as a nurse in nursing homes for nearly 20 years, I had a lot of experience caring for patients and families in the end stages of life. I was ready to move to the hospice, to a role providing more specialised care, and it was the best decision I made.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Each day can be very different. It's not always just about the physical nursing side, it can be about looking at the whole holistic approach to nursing and sometimes it's spending time with the families.

What’s the best thing about your job?
It’s really hard to put into words exactly why as it sounds strange to say I love my job (considering the role), but I do. The hospice enables staff to deliver the most amazing care in a lovely environment. There is such a calm feeling on the unit, even when we’re busy.

There’s something very special about caring for someone in their last weeks or days of life, and to be able to ensure their care needs are met and that they die with dignity and respect, with loved ones around them.
