Main site Volunteering with St Wilfrid's Opportunities Blog Volunteer Hub Young Clinical Volunteer Where: hospice Inpatient Unit; The Street Café When: one evening a week from 4pm to 8pm for the six-month volunteer programme DBS: enhanced with adult barring DBS clearance required Applications open: 17th February 2020 Application deadline: midday on 6th April 2020 Interviews will take place in early May YCV start date: Saturday 6th June 9.00am-5pm (all YCVs must be able to attend this training day). Shifts begin on the following Monday. Training and support offered Initial training Regular support and supervision from a linked volunteer mentor E-learning modules St Wilfrid’s Hospice Young Clinical Volunteer Certificate and reference upon successful completion of the programme About the role The Young Clinical Volunteer (YCV) programme is aimed at 16 to 23-year-olds in post-secondary education with an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare. This is a unique opportunity to gain special insight into all aspects of the hospice environment. As a YCV you will be supporting our nurses and healthcare assistants as they care for our patients and their families. To support you in your role, you will be linked with a mentor and receive ongoing e-training as you work towards the St Wilfrid’s Hospice YVC Certificate. Key responsibilities Meet and greet visitors to the hospice Assisting patients with supper Providing drinks for patients and their visitors Restocking clinical cupboards Providing companionship to patients Assisting patients’ friends and families with directions and providing information Working with other volunteers Pass on information and issues to relevant staff members Housekeeping tasks including laundry and tidying over-bed tables Work through tasks and gather information and evidence towards completion of the YCV Certificate incorporating the Care Certificate standards. Observe medical procedures and the use of inpatient unit equipment where appropriate Offer patients and family members hand massage, following training Assist nursing staff with the hygiene requirements of patients as necessary such as hands and face, hair brushing, teeth and mouth care Answer call bells as directed by clinical staff Your skills, abilities and qualifications 16 to 23 years old In post-education from across our catchment area An interest in health and social care A positive and cheerful attitude A level of maturity and confidence Open to learning new skills Reliable and trustworthy Sociable with good interpersonal skills Team player Commitment to working in a person-centred way Resilient and able to work in an emotionally challenging environment Love a challenge and ready to work hard Apply and more information To apply please download and complete both the volunteer application form and the YCV application form and return by email, post, or drop it in next time you’re at the hospice.
