St Wilfrid’s means so many things to me, but what I find most meaningful is how much opportunity there is within the hospice. It’s incredible to see how so many people involved with us turn a difficult situation into something so positive by supporting us, and not necessarily through fundraising – it could be as simple as donating clothes to our shops or telling a friend about the work we do. Also, personally, I’ve had the opportunity to get involved with so many different aspects of hospice life, which I love, and am very grateful for. This year, I’ve volunteered to be a mentor on our Young Clinical Volunteer program, which involves supporting our YCV’s as they undertake 6 months of voluntary clinical work. I’m so excited to see what new skills they learn and how they will develop over the course. It’s a bit corny, but there really is no typical day when you work in fundraising. Usually I’ll start the day answering emails, but from there, anything goes! You find yourself doing all sorts of things, including (but not limited to) putting batteries in 1000 tea lights, taking our Wilfie Bear mascot to school assemblies, and coming into the office to find my desk covered in cake! Today I’ve been organising recce visits for out 2020 Open Gardens season, working on plans for a brand new event we’re doing next year (watch this space!) doing research for our 2020 Great Wall of China Trek and looking over my information for our YCV programme – I’ve not even managed to have a cup of tea yet today! The first time I came to St Wilfrid’s was several years ago when I visited my friend who was being cared for in the IPU. I’d never visited a hospice before and it’s such a warm, welcoming place. I began working here earlier this year and, working in community engagement, means I talk to local groups, organisations and the public about the work of the hospice, volunteering roles, activities and events, so for me, St Wilfrid’s means many things, with the care and support of patients and their families at the heart of everything. A typical day in Community Engagement often includes contacting local community groups to talk about our Community Link project. This is where a group member chooses to be a point of contact for their group, thereby establishing links throughout the area. It’s a way to update the community of hospice news and upcoming events, and also a chance to learn about their services and activities which may be of interest to our patients and families. So I’m often in contact with these groups and meeting people who are interested in becoming a Community Link. I also attend networking events, offer hospice tours and visit groups and am also often to be found at a community awareness stand near you! So far today I’ve been putting together lots of information for our community link groups to post out, met a colleague to talk about a group and I’ve also arranged some meetings with several organisations to meet up with next week to discuss community links. I once sang at the Albert Hall! . #posw #volunteering #eastbourne #hailsham #pevensey #seaford #sussex #communitylinks #community #teamwilfs A post shared by People of St Wilfrid's Hospice (@peopleofstwilfrids) on Oct 9, 2019 at 1:21am PDT View this post on Instagram Sophie, Social Worker St Wilfrid’s offers the chance to make a real difference for people during what is usually a challenging time in their lives. That difference will depend on the individual, but the fact that the staff and volunteers here are afforded the time and resources to try and meet that person’s needs is what means so much to me. It normally starts with a warm welcome from the Hosts at reception; coffee; conversations with colleagues; perhaps attending a meeting, or checking to see whether there’s been any updates or developments with my clients. As a social worker I am always assessing a carer’s needs alongside those of the patient’s to ensure a relationship-based social work approach for the whole family. I also have a developmental role in the hospice, where I support the development of St Wilfrid’s safeguarding procedures and carers’ support services; accessing harder to reach groups; I am also preparing resources for a social work student who will be joining us soon. I attended the MDT and contributed to discussions about patients, offering advice and information on community mental health support, care packages at home, distraction techniques to manage emotional pain and referrals to services such as our Community Support Volunteer project. I visit patients in their homes where we discuss how we can best support them and their loved ones. Here we talk about the various options they have and can address any concerns. We talk about the benefits of an admission, should that be needed and reassure them their pain and discomfort could be reduced. It is then rewarding to be able to see patients who do choose to be admitted find a sense of calm, rest and are able to relax as their pain comes under control. St Wilfrid’s means people are supported to have the best quality of life right up until the end. It’s where us professionals work together with patients and their families to ensure patient-centred care is achieved. St Wilfrid’s means responding to people to the best of our ability. It’s a place where holistic care is paramount. . My day always starts with a catch up with my team. We discuss and prioritise patients depending on their needs and make a plan for the day ahead. Working in the community enables me to support patients to stay at home with their loved ones. It’s always a privilege be able to make a difference to people going through such a difficult time in their lives. . Today I visited two new patients who were referred to us for our input. The initial assessment process gives us an insight into the patients diagnosis and their journey so far, it enables us to plan their care and manage their symptoms. After the visits I returned to the office to document and refer to the appropriate services before making phone calls to other patients and planning the days ahead this week. . I started volunteering at the Hospice in 2012, worked here as a Healthcare assistant from 2014 & have recently returned as a Registered Nurse.
