Update from our CEO

Monday 25th April

As we enjoy a season of sunny days and nature springing back into life, it is good to report that our hospice building and operations are also flourishing.

Our café and hospice shop have been open now for a couple of months and are seeing increasing numbers of visitors. If you haven’t yet had chance to visit, please come and see the changes we have made in our public spaces. We have also taken the opportunity in recent months to refurbish some of our inpatient bedrooms, part of a rolling refurbishment programme for the building.

I’m pleased to say that we have lifted the overall restriction on the number of visitors to our inpatient unit, although we are still recommending no more than two patients at one time in patients’ rooms. To find out more detail about our visiting policy, please click here.

Our operating year runs from April to March and in the year just ended, we supported 1,510 patients with end of life care. We also provided direct counselling and other support to just under 500 carers and 120 children. I want to express my appreciation to all of our workforce for their efforts in what was another challenging year.

It was our 40th anniversary in 2022 and, despite the ongoing restrictions to our public fundraising programme, we had a successful year maintaining a stable financial position. Thank you to everyone who supported us last year – we simply could not do what we do without you. Thank you also to everyone who volunteered for us. Having seen our volunteer numbers reduce markedly during the early days of the Covid pandemic, they have been rising steadily again, with both established volunteers returning and new ones becoming involved. There are many volunteering opportunities with the hospice – if you are interested in finding out more, please take a look on this site or contact our Voluntary Services team at vsteam@stwhospice.org.

We have a busy programme of activities over the spring and summer, with our Open Gardens series just having started, Rainbow Run at the end of May and our flagship summer Lunch@ on 1st June, the first such event since 2019. A group of intrepid cyclists will be setting off the cycle from Eastbourne to Paris in the Wilfride at the beginning of May.

There is something for everyone at St Wilfrid’s!

With best wishes
