We want to support and suggest ways for people to feel more confident and comfortable talking about death and bereavement at home, in the workplace and in our lives.
Why?
A person living at home with a life-limiting illness may encounter healthcare services for only up to 5% of any day.
As a community what can we do to occupy and support the remaining 95% of their day?
As hospices, St Wilfrid’s and St Michael’s are jointly committed to reducing social isolation for those in our combined communities, knowing that a reduction in loneliness will significantly improve people’s end of life care.

During these workshops we will:
- Explore our attitudes to dying, death, loss and grief and why we sometimes avoid talking about it
- Understand what a Compassionate Community is
- Dispel myths around talking about death and dying
- Learn skills and techniques to help us be more comfortable and confident in taking part in these conversations
- Looking after ourselves
- Look at resources that we can share
Who are these workshops for?
These free two-hour workshops are for organisations and community groups who wish to grow their understanding and confidence in engaging with conversations around dying, death and loss.
They are freely available to organisations in Hastings and Rother area and the St Wilfrid’s catchment area (Eastbourne, Seaford, Hailsham, Uckfield, Heathfield and all the points in between).
The workshops are designed for between 10-15 participants, and we aim to bring the workshops to where you are.
The workshops are run by Lucy Cheshire – Compassionate Communities Lead for St Wilfrid’s Hospice and Kieran Mac Feely – Community Partnerships and Inclusion Lead for St. Michael’s Hospice.
