Angela Roberts is a Salon Assistant in the Streets Ahead salon, our in-house beauty salon here at the hospice. She has been volunteering for three years now, giving a couple of hours once a week, helping to make appointments, tidying the salon, organising the price cards and any general help that Mandy, the Salon Coordinator, needs. ‘I really enjoy helping each week.’

Before Angela started volunteering, she had never visited the hospice or knew anyone who had used our services. ‘I was looking for volunteering jobs after being out of work for seven years to bring up my children, but I think I was just drawn to coming here. It was nerve-wracking but I loved it from the minute I started the training.’

On Sunday 4th October, Angela will be running the London Marathon for St Wilfrid’s Hospice after previously running the Brighton Marathon for us last year. ‘I think it will be amazing to run past the iconic sights of London and to hear all the support from the crowds.’ She told me, ‘some friends from the Run Wednesdays club are also running it and a group of them are coming up too to cheer us on. I feel very excited and happy to be involved, especially if I can raise money for the hospice.’

‘The training is hard work but going really well. I’m doing a combination of cardio classes, short distance runs and a long training run every week.’

Mandy is also helping Angela to raise money by being sponsored to walk at least 10,000 steps a day! ‘I’m finding is very hard!’ she said, ‘I really appreciate everything Angela does for the hospice, she’s a real superstar and I really wanted to help her raise the money.’
