Get involved Our stories Mabel the Dog learns how to wrap at Crafty Friday Mabel normally feels more at home tearing wrapping paper into tiny shreds than turning out beautifully-presented packages, but she was open to learning a thing or two from gift-wrapping maestro Arona Khan, who shared some of her techniques at a recent instalment of the hospice’s Crafty Friday. Demonstrations with local artists, DIYers and crafters take place every fortnight between 10.30am and 1.30pm, and on alternate weeks visitors are welcome to bring their own supplies and work on their own projects over a cup of tea and a natter with newbies and seasoned Crafty Friday-ers alike! Past sessions have included Mosaic Malarky with Emma Law, a student on the BA (Hons) Designer Maker Course at East Sussex College and portraiture with Lea Fry, who is a Project Worker here at the hospice. Last time we were delighted to welcome ‘International Gift-Wrapping Expert,’ Arona Khan, who, according to Harpers & Queen, is the world’s first gift-wrapping consultant! Arona has appeared on television and radio and has offered her gift-wrapping services to some prestigious clients, including 10 Downing Street! Arona’s experience of working with some of the country’s most important people put her in good stead when it came to meeting Mabel and the fluffy friend was very impressed with the paper and burnt orange ribbon Arona had selected for her project - even if she said that an autumnal palette wouldn't be her first choice. Arona demonstrated how to wrap a copy of her DVD, which contains lots of handy tips that even the most novice gift-wrapper could pick up without too much difficulty. Although Mabel’s lack of opposable thumbs got in the way of her successfully wrapping her copy of Arona’s DVD, she’s said she looks forward to watching it after she’s caught up with the latest series of Polbark. Meanwhile, all of our human participants completed the project to stunning effect! At the next session of Crafty Friday on Friday 3rd May Nigel Wood will be showing us how to create a enchanting butterfly garden using origami! We’re always on the lookout for new workshops or people who can share their expertise at Crafty Friday. If this is you, please contact [email protected] or phone 01323 434275.
