Being an incredibly photogenic dog isn’t always a breeze; it’s easy to overlook just how exhausting the endless games of chase, digging holes in the garden and receiving lots of attention can be.

This week, Mabel needed to just get away from it all, and so decided to unwind with a series of pampering treatments at St Wilfrid’s Streets Ahead Hair and Nail Salon.

Streets Ahead doesn’t normally cater to dogs, but it was prepared to make an exception for this fluffy friend!

Mabel received a very warm welcome from Mandy, St Wilfrid’s Streets Ahead Co-ordinator and Ella, our lovely placement student who spent a week at the hospice as part of her Level 2 Beauty Therapy course at East Sussex College.

First things first: Mabel needed to address her ‘split end problem,’ and so opted for the Salon’s staple wash, cut and blow dry (£17)*.

Mabel said that Ella was very accommodating to her needs; these included having the hairdresser seat adjusted to a doggy-appropriate height and the regular dispensation of bribes - mostly in the form of sausage pieces - to ensure that Mabel sat still for her photos!

Ella was very gentle with Mabel, and even took the time to give her a groom with her favourite doggy hairbrush from home.

After the wash, cut and dry, Mabel said that she felt ‘like a new dog,’ and promptly announced that she was ready for her pawdicure.

Mabel selected a ‘bold yet tasteful’ shade of magenta for the treatment, just one element of her preparations for attending an event that she quipped was ‘essentially Crufts, only prestigious.’

Ella made Mabel feel so relaxed during her pedicure, that she decided to stay at the table for her final treatment: a back massage (£15).

Mabel described her massage treatment as ‘deeply restorative’ and ‘an infinite improvement on the one she received during that Himalayan retreat in the spring of 2016.’ We didn’t ask for further explanation.

Mabel said that her day of pampering was ‘just what she needed’ after what must have been an unspeakably stressful week.

She was also delighted to discover that the Salon is staffed by generous qualified hairdressers and beauty therapists who volunteer their free time, and that the treatments that made her feel so incredible will directly support local patients and their families!
