Last week, St Wilfrid’s Hospice hosted a special event at which Sussex Freemasons gifted vehicles to four local hospices.

St Wilfrid’s Hospice, Martlets Hospice (Brighton and Hove), St Barnabas House (Worthing) and St Michael’s Hospice (Hastings and Rother) all received vehicles which will enable Hospice at Home teams to reach more patients in their own homes.

Sussex Masonic Charities is a longstanding and generous supporter of many local charities, and has raised a large amount of funding for equipment identified as essential by hospices over the years.

More than 130 visitors attended the launch, where Sussex Masons unveiled a new logo for their Sussex Masonic Giving initiative with a dazzling laser display before presenting the much-needed vehicles to the four hospices.

Michael Harris, Chairman of Sussex Masonic Charities said 'Sussex Freemasons are proud to be able to directly support the work of our Sussex hospices and the amazing work that the Care at Home teams do in our local communities.'

David Scott-Ralphs, Chief Executive of St Wilfrid’s Hospice, said:

'This is a wonderfully generous gift from the Sussex Masons, not just to St Wilfrid’s Hospice but to all four Sussex hospices. Collectively, our community teams travel thousands of miles each year to support people in their own homes – last year we reached over 6,000 people in total. So having reliable transport is very important to all of us. This donation of the cars builds on the fantastic support the hospice movement receives year after year from Masonic Lodges across Sussex and we are very grateful.'

John Summers, Donor Development Manager at St Wilfrid’s, said:

'Local lodges and chapters of the masons have been supporters of the hospice over many years and we are exceptionally grateful to them for this gift. The car will make it possible for the nursing teams to see more patients in their own homes as part of our Closer to You initiative.'

'Closer to You' is St Wilfrid's mission to reach more patients in its catchment area - which extends from Eastbourne to Uckfield, Heathfield and all points in between - who would benefit from its end of life services.
