Three years ago my wife started volunteering at St Wilfrid’s as part of the Host Volunteer team. Having spent all her working life in the NHS, perhaps it wasn’t surprising she embraced a role with direct patient contact. She would come back from a shift and tell me how she had enjoyed her time or what challenges had arisen. At the time, my contact with St Wilfrid’s was limited to visiting The Street Café – very enjoyable it was too. Over time though I began to wonder if there was anything I could do to get involved. I thought that it wouldn’t involve patient contact, which I thought would not be my forte. As my last career role had been in editorial and publishing - general administration or communications seemed like an excellent area to consider. So it proved to be. After my application, I was contacted by the Communications team, a small but highly talented bunch, and offered my services. Considering the amount of material they generate, it’s impressive how such a small team manages it all. I’ve provided a couple of articles for in-house and local press and am working on developing materials for this blog. Having said I didn’t think I was suited to patient contact, one of my recent assignments was to write a piece on the Men’s Cookery Group. I enjoyed my time there so much that I’m now volunteering as part of the team there as well. St Wilfrid’s has a way of surprising you! If, like me, you are someone who has found themselves wondering if you have got anything to offer St Wilfrid’s, remember that there are literally hundreds of jobs which need doing and they may not all be obvious.
