On Friday 16th July, Richard Croft took to the skies and jumped out of a plane to raise money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice in memory of his wife, Lynn. After being first diagnosed on the 30th December 2020, Lynn was cared for by St Wilfrid’s and died on the 17th April 2021.

We spoke to Richard before the skydive and he kindly shared his story: ‘When Lynn was first in hospital, they asked if she would like the hospice to get in touch. That’s what she wanted, and St Wilfrid’s was brilliant from the word go.

‘She was cared for at home by a Nurse called Helen who we were always able to phone if needed. There was one time when Lynn had to go to hospital and Helen organised a bed for our home straight away, so it was there for Lynn when she got back. She would call us regularly too, to check on Lynn, and when Lynn started to struggle and couldn’t stand on her own, Helen suggested she go to the hospice to be cared for there for a couple of days. We visited her regularly, but then we got a call one morning at 4am telling us she hadn’t lasted the night.

‘We were together for 54 years. She used to moan at me a lot, but she was loving. She loved children; she used to run a playgroup and she thought a lot of our own children and grandchildren. I didn’t know I could ever miss someone the way I miss Lynn. This wasn’t the way it was supposed to be - I always thought I would die first - but I’m grateful for the care the hospice gave her.

‘I knew I wanted to raise money for St Wilfrid’s, and I was contemplating between a couple of challenges. It was my colleague who persuaded me to choose the skydive. I’m not nervous or worried about it at all. I did steel erecting for 20 years, so I’m used to heights!’

We are pleased to share that the skydive went well and Richard has raised £480 for the hospice. We are incredibly grateful for his support and would like to thank everyone who has sponsored him. If you would like to make a donation, you can visit his JustGiving page here.
