Community Links Get Together On Monday 24th February, our Community Engagement Co-ordinator, Lucy Cheshire, welcomed around 20 members from our Community Links to a Get Together at the hospice. Those who were in attendance included Age UK East Sussex, Eastbourne Rainbow Group and Vitality Villages. Community Links are organisations and community groups around our catchment area who may provide services and activities that our patients and families could benefit from and can share our volunteering opportunities and upcoming fundraising events. For example, Eastbourne Talking Newspapers Association are a group of around 50 volunteers who record local and national newspapers and send them out to those who are visually impaired. They send out roughly 200 one hour recordings a week, through speakers that have been specially designed for accessibility. Not only does the association recognise the need for newspapers to be user-friendly, but it also allows the individual to feel involved, as they can discuss current topics with others, which they may not have been able to do previously. The Get Together involved each organisation and community group sharing their work with the rest of the group, swapping leaflets and having the chance to network with one another, as well as giving feedback to Lucy about how they have found being a Community Link so far. One member told the group that ‘to hear about what else is going on, it is really valuable.’ Our Chief Executive, David Scott-Ralph, also said a few words, thanking the groups for getting involved and helping the hospice to take our services out into the community. ‘It’s such an exciting development.’ ‘It was lovely to see so many of our Community Links at our Get Together!’ said Lucy. ‘The afternoon was a great opportunity to hear more about the many services and activities that our Community Links offer and for us to let others know about some upcoming events and volunteering opportunities at St Wilfrid’s.’ For a full list of our Community Links organisations, or if you would like to register your interest in becoming a Community Link, please visit our website - https://www.stwhospice.org/our-community-links or contact Lucy Cheshire via [email protected].
