Summary Statement:

“St Wilfrid’s Hospice has acquired a 3.5 acre site off Broadwater Way, Eastbourne on which to build the new hospice.   Building work will begin shortly and be complete by Autumn 2013.  The new hospice will be designed around patient needs with 20 single ensuite bedrooms, treatment and therapy rooms for day patients and improved educational facilities.”

  1. Q Where is the site?
    • The site is off Broadwater Way in Eastbourne.  It is a 3.5 acre site near to the District General Hospital (DGH), Sussex Downs College, Park Practice surgery, David Lloyd and Sainsbury’s.  The site is served by two bus routes and is an easy walk from Hampden Park Station.
  2. Q  Why this location?
    • St Wilfrid's evaluated 68 locations, many of which were generated through the Support Our Search campaign. The new site is in our historic heartland of Eastbourne, close to the DGH, and other community facilities and is accessible with good transport links
  3. Q  How much did the site cost?
    • The charity paid less than £1 million for a site that is four times bigger than its current site.
  4. Q What will the building look like?
    • The patient facilities will be at ground level built around landscaped gardens.  The building will also have a two storey element.  Overall the building will aim to be environmentally responsible wherever possible. An animated film of the new building is being developed and will be available online soon.
  5. Q Will patients be affected by road noise?
    • The proposed site is 40 metres away from the nearest road which is largely screened by mature trees. The building and landscape has been thoughtfully designed to minimise noise and create areas of peaceful sanctuary.  The inpatient bedrooms will be built around an internal garden.
  6. Q Why are you building a new hospice?
    • We are unable to meet existing demand for our specialist care with just ten beds. The new hospice will double the number of in-patient bedrooms enabling us to meet growing demand for our specialist care.
  7. Q Can you afford to run a bigger hospice?
    • Nursing for the extra beds will cost an additional £140,000 a year.
Caring for the communities of Eastbourne, Polegate, Pevensey, Seaford, Hailsham, Heathfield, Uckfield and everywhere in between
