Trustees as company directors have duties and responsibilities under company as well as charity law. Trustees are recruited for their specific skills and expertise and work in partnership with the Chief Executive and her senior team in setting strategy, approving policy, ensuring compliance with regulation and monitoring the performance of the organisation against previously agreed standards. The Chief Executive reports to the Board of Trustees through the Chairman. The Board delegates operational management to the Chief Executive and her team. The Chief Executive’s senior team include a Medical Director, Patient Services Director and Finance Director (part time).
Finance key facts
It will cost £3.5 million to run the service in 2010/11. In the last year budgeted expenditure has been reduced by £113k. Salary costs account for 80% of expenditure; we employ 114 people (75 whole time equivalent). Over 400 volunteers actively support the work of the hospice. The NHS funds 15% of all expenditure. Fundraising income is generated through events, donations and grant making trusts. The six retail outlets in our trading subsidiary make a net profit of £206k. The single largest source of income for the charity comes is legacy gifts. The charity commissioned research into legacy giving to support assertions for budget forecasting for the next five years. The key challenge for the charity is to find new sources of reliable income in order to reduce reliance on this one source of income.

We are motivated by ensuring that we get the detail right very much more of the time, that we empower our patients to live their lives as fully as they can whilst knowing they are dying and that we sensitively and skillfully accompany them as they face loss. We are determined to offer services that patients and families value, to demonstrate excellent stewardship of generously donated funds and to be excellent employers.
