Volunteer for us in retail
Whether it’s minutes or months, days or decades, every moment matters.
Volunteers are at the heart of our work in the retail company raising vital funds so that we can continue to deliver care to individuals and their families in your community.
We’re always looking for new faces to join our teams and have a variety of roles in which you can share your skills and experience. In return we offer training, a supportive team, laughs and free tea and coffee.
Whether you are looking to expand your CV or support a local cause we have the perfect role for you.

What could I do?
We have a variety of roles on offer – these all help us reach our goal of raising funds for the hospice.
·         Van Companions – helping us with deliveries and collections in the community  
·         Media Sorter– helping us sorting and selecting donated items such as books and films
·         Merchandising Assistant – assist manager in optimising presentation of all stock
·         Stock Assistants – sorting goods for sale in our shops
·         Warehouse Assistants – keeping our warehouse clean, tidy and safe
·         Sales Assistants – delivering excellent customer service and helping people find those unique items
·         eBay Assistant – helping us to build our online shop – a new and exciting venture!
·         Communications and Promotions Assistant – helping us to share our vision and let your creativity flow!
·         PAT Tester – testing all electrical items for sale in our retail stores
·         Volunteer Social Media Content Creator – creating unique and engaging online content to increase support for our retail team
·         Volunteer Donations Assistant – welcoming and assisting our donors at our sorting centre
·         Supporter Communications Assistant – assist with manning telephones and arranging collections from donors

What can I gain from volunteering?
Our volunteers often tell us how rewarding their time with us is; you'll be part of a compassionate community and feel a real sense of pride in what you do. You'll meet new people, gain valuable experience, and develop your skillset.
You will receive a reference from us when applying for jobs, training or places at college/University,.
If you have a specific idea/project in mind which you think would help the retail company and you please let us know. We are always interested in new ideas!
What kind of people are you looking for?
The personal qualities we look for in all of our volunteers are: flexibility and adaptability, the ability to work well with others, commitment and reliability, sensitivity, kindness and empathy, and openness to learning and development.
There are some roles which require specific skills or requirements so please take a look and let us know if you have any questions.
I can only spare a couple of hours a week. Can I still help?
Yes please! We appreciate whatever support that you are able to give. All that we ask is we know when you are likely to be with us so we can plan ahead.
You could volunteer;
·         For a specific project
·         During term time only
·         When you are able to and at short notice
 
Do you pay travel expenses?
We pay reasonable travel expenses.

Will I get training?
The retail team will provide training which is specific to your role. This is outlined in each role description. All volunteers will receive an induction which will be delivered by the manager of the team you work in.


How do I become a volunteer?
The first thing we ask is that you complete our application form and return this to us via email to: retail@stwhospice.org. Alternatively, you can pop it in the post or hand it in to one of our shops.  
Once we've received and reviewed your application, we'll invite you in to an informal interview and taster sessions where you can find out more about what we do and how you could help us. How long will it take for you to get back to me?
We are normally available Monday to Saturday 9am – 5pm but please bear with us if it takes a while to respond as we are normally serving customers, taking in donations and waiting for you to volunteer with us!
If you have not heard from us within a week it may mean that something has gone wrong so please contact us again.
